The Paracas National Reserve is a protected natural area located on the Paracas Peninsula along the southern coast of Peru, approximately 161 miles south of Lima.
It is known for its stunning desert coastal landscapes, diverse wildlife, and archaeological sites.
Due to the characteristics of the ecosystem, it can be visited at any time of the year. Tourists can always enjoy the pleasant climate and optimal conditions for observing wildlife.
Below is an overview of what you can expect on a tour of the Paracas National Reserve:
The Ballestas Islands are an important wildlife sanctuary. At Excursions in Peru Tours we take sea tours to take visitors around the islands where they can observe a wealth of marine life including sea lions, penguins, dolphins and numerous species of birds such as pelicans and cormorants.
This distinctive beach is named after its reddish-brown sand and cliffs. The contrasting colors of the ocean and land create a picturesque scene.
Although swimming is not normally permitted due to strong currents, tourists are welcome to enjoy the view and take photographs.
The Cathedral was a natural rock formation that looked like a cathedral. Unfortunately, it collapsed in 2007 due to natural erosion. Despite its collapse, the area is still of geological interest.
This viewing point offers panoramic views of the reserve and is a great place to observe flamingos, which inhabit the nearby salt flats. The coloration of the water and the flamingos against the desert backdrop make for beautiful photo opportunities.
Some tours may include a visit to the Paracas Museum, which provides information about the history, archaeology, and biodiversity of the region. Exhibits often feature artifacts from the Paracas culture, an ancient civilization that inhabited the area.
